This guide has been made for employers, human resources departments, gender experts and workers’ representatives who are interested in discovering and satisfying the work-life balance needs of men in their company, in order to achieve a more motivated, happier and productive workforce.
Supporting carers to combine work and care is critical for improving the quality of life of carers and, besides the state’s and the local community’s provision of care services, employers are central to this. Worker’s provider and caregiver roles affect absenteeism and life satisfaction, which in turn affects job performance. It is in the interest of employers to develop family-friendly programs and policies to support employees’ multiple social roles.
In 2005, companies across Europe participated in a study on involving men in gender equality processes. When asked how they were making sure that their workers could participate in care work their usual answer was "We don't have anything like that here!". Gender was only seen as an issue for the women of the company and there was no awareness for the situation of men in care-giving roles.
MiC partners across eight countries conducted studies in over 20 different companies to find out what had changed in the past 16 years. The results were publish in national reports also linked on this page. Now, project partners developed a cross-country comparison of the studies, highlighting European barriers against men taking on care-giving roles, supportive factors developed by companies, a model of change, how the COVID-19 pandemic influenced developments in the caring masculinities field, as well as good practice and recommendations.
This report is a must-read for any company interested in making gender equality real and decreasing the gender care gap.
This study document builds on the national benchmarking reports, which reveal the situation in eight European countries on gender gaps in care and domestic work, in work and work-life balance, and on how society can support caring masculinities to reduce such gaps and enhance gender equality. The study analysed the current situation in Norway, Austria, Germany, Iceland, Spain, North Macedonia, Slovenia and Poland.
We are very happy to present you with our national benchmarking reports, which include context analyses of the seven participant countries as well as organizational analyses for five of them.
Organizational analyses focus on best practices that can foster caring masculinities. Our qualitative researchers have done around 150 interviews within 18 organizations/companies in five countries.
Many different topics have emerged such as the flexibility stigma, organizational culture, partners’ negotiation, co-workers’ support, etc. Below we focus on four of these topics, as expressed by male caregivers themselves: the benefits of spending time with children during parental leave, the stand-by attitude at home, the obstacles of managerial jobs for fathering and the importance of supervisors support.
